How Lucky are We?
We've Got The Goat!
Did you know that the Hamptons is home to one of only 50 professional puppet theaters in the entire country? How lucky are we?
Liz Joyce and a couple of puppets found their way to Sag Harbor almost a decade ago. Seeking a home for her puppet family, Liz quickly realized that the vibrant, creative and marvelous Hamptons community was a place where they could thrive. Goat on a Boat Puppet Theater was born.
“Puppeteers are story-tellers,” Liz explains. “And there is a human need for stories, for the give and take of live theatre.” And give and take is what Goat on a Boat is all about. With weekly puppet shows that feature both Liz’s original works, and an ever-changing array of guest performers plus puppet play groups and art workshops, Goat on a Boat is a vibrant, important member of the Hamptons community.
“I especially love our Puppet Play Group,” Liz says with some pride and passion. “They provide the chance for kids to play and to use their imagination. And I can see even the littlest ones learning the discipline of watching theater, the necessity of forming the pictures and stories in their minds.” All that, plus a great opportunity for moms to connect with one another makes Goat on a Boat the perfect place for kids three and under on Mondays and Fridays.
Coming up on March 20 is Goat on a Boat’s annual Bambini Ball. This family-friendly benefit “ball” will feature dinner, dancing, cocktails, games. And, of course, a puppet show. Above the Goat on March 20 from 5:00-7:00. Tickets are $10 for kids and $30 for adults. Proceeds benefit The Goat’s Guest Performance Series.

Safety Tips From Chris
Car Seats...Not So Fast!

On November 24th, 2009 NYS law changed making it mandatory for children under 8 to be in a proper child safety restraint system. Although, it is recommended that any child under 4'9” tall be using a belt positioning booster of some sort. Most parents believe that installing a car seat is simple, but there are far more things to think to about than just making sure the LATCH belt is tight. It is estimated that 75% of all child car seats are installed incorrectly or used improperly. Here are a few important things to think about when installing your child’s restraint.
The child seat should not move more than 1” side to side at the base, the area where the seat bottom meets the seat back. Using the LATCH system and seatbelt does not provide extra protection. Studies show that one or the other is sufficient. Utilizing a device such as the Mightytite® may make your car seat snug, but it actually stretches the seat belt and studies have been shown these to cause seat belts to break in an accident making your car seat, and child, a projectile.
It is also important to keep your child rear facing as long as you can. While having the ability to see your child may put you and your child's mind at ease, rear facing seats provide much more head and back support than front facing. To get more information on child passenger safety, or to have your child’s seat inspected, you can contact a local CPST. Visit www.safekids.org to find the nearest CPST in your area. - Chris Dimon, owner of Safe Hampton (www.safehampton.com) and Child Safety Professional

Camp Tip #5
Home Sick!

Your child may ask you to take him home or come and pick him up at some point during their summer camp experience.
They may want to come home after a few days simply because they miss the comfort of home and family.
It could be that they want to come home because of a unpleasant social incident or that they have not yet bonded with one of the other campers.
Encourage her to talk about what's going well at camp, and ask her to "hang in there" for a couple of days and make contact with the counselors.
Intensity and frequency in your child's homesickness is what should determine whether you bring them home or not. Some warning signs:
Isolating themselves and avoiding contact with their peers.
Consistently declining invitations from staff and fellow campers to participate in activities.
Daily talk about running away or wanting to go home.
No positive responses to counselors' attempts to help her form friendships or participate in camp activities.
If a camp director calls to ask you to take your child home, it is because believe that they have exhausted their efforts to make this a good experience for your child. If you receive such a call, it's time to bring your child home.
If you do bring your child home from camp, don't shame them as they are already dealing with guilt and embarrassment about leaving camp. Let them know you understand why she didn't like camp, emphasizing that camp isn't an experience that all kids enjoy.
Start soliciting ideas from them and offering your own suggestions as to how they can enjoy the remainder of their summer vacation.
Both of you need to remember that there's life beyond summer camp.
