East Hampton local Cole Brauer made history Friday March 8th, 2024. Brauer, who currently resides in Maine, sailed in her boat First Light and not only made a speed record for her boat class, came in 2nd place, she also made history by being the first American woman to solo sail nonstop around the world. Being solo for 130 days can do a number on your mental health. Though on her own, she continued to connect to the world through social media growing 400,000 Instagram followers and documenting every leg of her incredible journey. Setting sail October 29th, 2023, Brauer had some ups and downs but visibly withheld a strong and positive attitude. I had the pleasure of interviewing Mr. Adam Fine, Superintendent of East Hampton Union Free School District and Principal when Cole attended East Hampton High School. MKHamptons: How do you feel about this historic moment?
Mr. Fine: Beyond proud. As I followed her progress I only began to grasp the magnitude of the task at hand. To be able to do this and do it alone is unreal.
MKHamptons:What is your fondest memory of Cole?
Mr. Fine: My favorite memory and I think I told the news this was the time she saw a car accident unfold in front of her. As a 17 or 18 year old it would be shocking to see such an event. But Cole pulled over!!! And helped the person who was in the accident. It turned out to be a teacher from a neighboring school district. Just a reflection of the type of person she was at a very young age.
MKHamptons: Do you think EHHS may have Cole as a guest speaker one day?
Mr. Fine: Working on this as we speak!
MKHamptons: Thinking of the drive and tenacity of Cole who grew up in the Hamptons community. If you could say something to the up and coming students of the Hamptons community, what would it be?
Mr. Fine: As cliche as it is...setting your mind to something, a goal...and persevering can help you achieve your dreams. It says something about the human spirit!
