A Change, Would Do You Good!

By Brooke Cracco April 8, 2016

Scene: We get in our car, turn up the tunes and sing every word to every song that comes on the radio. Not even knowing that we had the brain capacity to memorize, let alone recite out loud, each and every word. And yet we do it without even paying attention to the words or their meaning. Cut.

Sheryl Crow’s song came on the radio the other day, and without hesitation, I was belting out her lyrics, dancing in my seat. Who knew I was even a fan?! But the more I listened to her words, the more it resonated. Maybe not word for word, but the concept of this song, I related. A change, would do you good…..there’s a concept.

For most, change is a feared word. Something unfamiliar. Something that isn’t routine, or habit or action. Something that often comes with hesitation and push-back. But yet, every day of our lives, as parents, we have change. The change in the way our kiddos eat. The change in the way our kiddos sleep. The change in the way they communicate, pee, poop, speak. The little lives around us change every day, but yet, we don’t. There’s food for thought. Are children without fear? Are they so curious that they need to find the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow? Has society around them not tainted the way they grow yet – willing to push the limits and try things even though they may fail?

I asked this question in class today. What is something you do everyday that you wish you didn’t or could change? There were universally agreed upon answers – stop rushing my kids, putting down the phone, learning to be more patient. I am guilty of all of these. We are parents trying to juggle a circus in our hands at every given moment. Its hard work. It leaves no time to think at the end of the day. We are on autopilot all day long without even thinking what we do. We just go through the same motions each and every day.

But what if we change the way we think. Step outside of our comfort zone a little. A baby step each day – Maybe making and programming the coffee the night before instead of making it sleep-deprived the next morning with kids hanging off your legs. Taking the time to play (yes, trucks and dollies in your hands kind of playing) with our kids. Trying out a new meal none of you have had yet. Yes, we may fail, but wouldn’t you regret not trying the things that may help you and your families in the end? Pick yourself up and try again. Take note of our kids in the way they live….it may shed some healthy light in the way we should live ours.

Maybe these small changes will factory-reset our brains in the way we operate on auto-pilot. Maybe we will look back on the way things were and smile because of the way things are now, knowing it was because of a small or large change in the way we live. Don’t be afraid of the unknown, be excited of the exploration ahead. A change, will do you good.
