MARCH In Like a Lion, Out Like A Lamb!

By Brooke Cracco March 25, 2016

Yes this month started like a text book March month. Snowy roads, cold blustery winds, school closures…again! But, the silver lining is within sight! Crocuses are making their debut from under those thawed grounds, the air smelling differently, and the birds even sound happy! With Day Light Savings gifting us with this extra hour of warm light, we need to take advantage of it! Spring is a just a stone’s throw away!

Put dinner on the table a little earlier if you can. Or better yet, pack it to go! Put on a few extra layers and head down to the nearest beach, park or playground! Spend some quality time with your family in a healthy and stress free environment. Sometimes being in the confines of home during our kiddo’s dinner ‘witching hours’ can be challenging! So get outside for your next meal! Change it up a bit from the normal inside eating, and these alfresco dining times will surely impress upon you all in such a positive way.

After dinner, let those kiddos play and run out some pent up energy. You can still keep an eye on them while you do a few high impact and muscle toning exercises.

Using the elements of your beach, park or playground, find a sturdy park bench, wooden ledge or curb. You will be using these for each of these exercises.

A box jump is when you go from a standing position and propel yourself (both feet at same time) onto a higher platform. For a lower intensity, perform a box jump by propelling yourself up onto your platform 1 leg at a time, and 1 leg down at a time. Using a bench, ledge or curb, begin with 25 consecutive box jumps – feet starting and ending a little more than hip width apart. After those 25, position yourself with both palms on your bench, ledge or curb in a push-up position and do 10 elevated pushups. Back to box jumps for 20 consecutive box jumps, down to 10 elevated pushups. Back to 15 box jumps, down to 10 elevated pushups. And finally back to 10 box jumps, down to 10 elevated pushups.

And we can’t forget about those cores! Position yourself seated on the edge of your ledge and lean back so that your core is engaged, and your hands on the edge with fingers facing your feet. Raise both feet hip high and begin tapping one foot down at a time and then the other. Keep this momentum going for a count of 60.

Don’t be surprised if your kiddos ditch the slide and come join you instead! They will see this as fun!

Sure, it’s nice to be able to work out on your own time, alone. But a healthy and active life can happen in the presence of our whole family too. Remember, we are constantly setting examples for our little ones. They watch our every move - so let’s make it a good move, a happy one. Just like the month of March, our days start out roaring, fast and fierce, but can end on a healthy, peaceful and calm note.
