Do You Want to Build a Snowman?

By Brooke Cracco January 22, 2016

Yes, we live in an area where there are technically 4 seasons! Sweet smelling air and blossoming flowers for Spring. Beautiful beaches and hot sun for Summer. Crisp air and comfy sweaters for Fall. But what does that mean for the colder months? SNOW!

Ok. I know most of us dread the slippery and inconvenient white stuff, but let’s change our mindset to what fun we can all have during these colder months! Don’t panic about stocking up on bread and milk!!! What you need is to be prepared to keep up your great exercise momentum, and I am here to help encourage you!

While it may be tough to get outside in treacherous snowy conditions, you still can make sure to get your heart rate up and shift your metabolism in high gear! Feed those little ones, set them up with a blanket and book and get yourself moving! Here is a great at-home snowed in workout you can do if you can’t get to your Hamptons Fit4Mom class! This series should take you no more than 15 minutes to complete in full. Keep the time minimal between each exercise!

Warm up: Walk or Jog in place - 3 minutes

Cardio: Jumping Jacks – 2 minutes

Strength: Push Ups - 2 sets of 15 reps (on your knees or toes)

Cardio: High Knees – 1 minute (high or low impact)

Strength: Tricep Dips – 2 sets of 15 reps (on step or chair with knees bent or straight)

Cardio: Butt Kickers – 2 minutes (high or low impact)

Strength: Overhead/Military Press with tubes (use soup cans or milk jugs if you don’t have a resistance tube) – 2 sets of 15 reps

Core: Plank for as long as you can 2x

Stretch and smile – YOU DID IT!

How pretty is it when the snow has stopped and a beautiful blanket of undisturbed white is covering as far as the eye can see?! Doesn’t it want to make you dive in and get your inner snow angel going?! Bundle up those kiddos and get outside! Just because it’s cold, doesn’t mean you should stay cooped up inside! Did you know that shoveling snow can burn upwards of 500 calories per hour?! The cold propels your body to burn more calories! Your body maintains an average inner temperature of 98.6 degrees. When your body is cold and your core temperature drops, the body needs to exert extra energy to bring that inner temperature back up (which also can be achieved by shivering), which in turn burns calories! So while your kids are busy making that snowman, clean off your stoops, walkways and cars! Of course with a few snowballs thrown in between those heavy shovel sessions! Remember though, shovel the top layer of snow first and then to the bottom! No need to injure yourself while having some serious calorie burn FUN! And always hydrate!

Reward those runny noses, rosy cheeks and lungs full of fresh Winter air, with some well deserved hot coco! These are the moments in life where happy memories are created with you and your families. So let go of the thought that Winter stinks, and embrace the fact that this will put toothy smiles on your faces and make you feel refreshed and recharged! Let it SNOW!
